Missed your QBCC licence renewal? Strict deadlines apply before an expired licence can no longer be restored. Find out what happens if your QBCC licence is suspended or cancelled and when a fresh application may be required.

Letting your QBCC licence expire can have consequences, particularly if you leave it too long to take action.

Whether you hold a QBCC Builder, Trade Contractor, Site Supervisor or Nominee Supervisor Licence, keeping your licence current is your responsibility.

If you’ve missed your renewal date, there may still be an opportunity to renew or restore your licence. However, strict timeframes apply.

If your renewal fee isn’t paid by the due date, the QBCC may suspend your licence.

A suspended licence means you cannot lawfully carry out building work under that licence, including entering into contracts, providing quotes or tenders, or completing building work already underway.

Under the standard QBCC renewal process:

  • Within three months of expiry: You can generally complete a late renewal.
  • Following cancellation: You may have a further three months to apply for restoration if the cancellation was due to non-payment of renewal fees.
  • After the restoration period: You will generally need to make a fresh licence application.

These timeframes depend on your licence status and do not apply to every QBCC licence category.

One way to stay on top of your licensing obligations is to register for the QBCC’s online portal (myQBCC).
The portal provides a convenient way to manage a range of licensing matters, including:

  • Licence renewals: Access online renewal and payment services.
  • Change of particulars: Keep your contact information, including your email, phone number and address, up to date.
  • Minimum Financial Requirements (MFR): Access relevant financial reporting services, including annual reporting where required.
  • Company licensing: Manage certain licence information and lodge relevant notifications or supporting documents
  • Home Warranty Insurance: Access relevant Queensland Home Warranty Scheme services, including lodging and managing insurance premium payments for eligible residential building work.

Not every licensing change can be completed directly through the portal. Some matters, including changes to company directors or nominees, require specific forms and supporting documentation.

Keeping your contact details current is particularly important so that you receive correspondence from the QBCC, including renewal notices and requests for information.

Remember, registering for myQBCC does not mean your licence will renew automatically. You remain responsible for meeting renewal deadlines and ongoing licensing obligations.

If your licence has been cancelled and the restoration period has passed, you will generally need to submit a new QBCC Licence Application.

This means meeting the current licensing requirements, which may have changed since your original licence was granted.

For long-standing licence holders, this can be particularly significant. Qualifications previously accepted by the QBCC may no longer satisfy the current requirements.

What could have been a straightforward renewal may now involve additional documentation, qualifications and application costs.

If you’ve missed your renewal, the first step is to confirm whether your licence is suspended, cancelled or still eligible for renewal.

You can check your details using the official QBCC Licensee Register.

If your licence is still eligible for renewal or restoration, contact the QBCC directly to confirm the requirements and applicable deadlines.

At Construction Licensing, we assist builders, trade contractors and supervisors with licensing matters, including circumstances where a cancelled licence can no longer be restored.

We can review your previous licensing history, qualifications and experience to assess the requirements for making a fresh application.

Don’t assume that holding a licence previously means you will automatically qualify again.

If your QBCC licence has expired or been cancelled, obtaining the right advice early can help you understand your options and avoid further unnecessary delays.

Renewal and restoration eligibility depends on individual circumstances, licence status and the applicable QBCC requirements. Certain occupational and specialist licence categories have different renewal and restoration processes. Always confirm your licence status and applicable deadlines directly with the QBCC.
