Obtaining a QBCC Builder Licence isn’t always about how much experience you have. Often, it’s about being able to demonstrate that experience in a way that meets the QBCC’s licensing requirements.
David’s journey is a great example.
More Than 10 Years Managing Residential Projects
David had spent more than a decade managing residential construction projects for his father-in-law’s building business. Building was part of the family, with more than 80 years of history in the industry, and he had developed extensive practical experience supervising projects from start to finish.
A family member had previously used Construction Licensing to obtain a QBCC Medium Rise Builder Licence and recommended David contact us to discuss his own eligibility.
Following an Initial Licensing Consultation, we assessed David’s experience and determined he had a strong pathway towards a QBCC Builder Low Rise Licence.
Experience Alone Isn’t Enough
Like many applicants, David initially thought the application would simply involve completing the forms and attaching a few supporting documents. The reality was quite different.
Preparing a compliant QBCC application required us to carefully document his project history, obtain detailed referee statements, review employment arrangements and gather supporting financial records to clearly demonstrate his supervisory experience.
Once David reviewed the draft application, he quickly appreciated the level of detail required.
A QBCC Checklist Letter
David lodged his application in July 2023.
As is common with many QBCC licence applications, the Commission requested further information.
The main issue centred around David’s employment arrangement.
Although he was paid under a subcontractor arrangement, the actual way he carried out his role more closely reflected that of an employee supervising construction projects on behalf of the licensed builder.
This distinction was important because the QBCC needed to clearly understand the relationship between David and the licensed builder responsible for the projects.
Presenting the Right Evidence
We worked with David to prepare a detailed response explaining his role and responsibilities, together with supporting evidence that demonstrated how the arrangement operated in practice.
Rather than simply responding to the checklist, the objective was to present a clear and consistent picture that aligned with the licensing requirements.
A Successful Outcome
In August 2023, David was granted his QBCC Builder Low Rise Licence.
The outcome reflected not only his years of practical experience but also the importance of presenting that experience in a structured and compliant manner.
Reflecting on the process, David said:
“I thought it would just be filling in a few forms. Once I saw what was actually involved, I realised I couldn’t have done it properly myself. When the QBCC came back with additional questions, having Rebecca there to guide me through the process made all the difference.”
Thinking About Your Own Builder Licence?
Many experienced site supervisors, foremen and construction managers already have the practical experience required to obtain a QBCC Builder Licence.
The challenge is often identifying the strongest projects, selecting the right referees and presenting the evidence in a way that satisfies the QBCC’s requirements.
At Construction Licensing, that’s where we can help.
We provide an honest assessment of your eligibility, identify any gaps early, and prepare a structured application designed to give you the best possible chance of success.
