Do you need a Carpentry Licence in Queensland?

Discover the essential steps to obtaining a QBCC Carpentry Licence in Queensland. From trade qualifications to legal requirements, our experienced team can guide you through the process and help you unlock a world of opportunities in the carpentry and construction industry.
Step One: Obtain Carpentry Trade Qualifications

The first step to becoming a carpenter is to become qualified in the trade. You can do this through an apprenticeship or by obtaining your Certificate III through a Registered Training Organisation.  Not all qualifications are equal! As the industry grows and evolves, a qualification that was accepted 5, 10 or 20 years ago may not be accepted now. Our experienced team can help assess your trade qualifications and help you identify anything else that needs to be taken care of before applying for your QBCC Trade Licence.

In addition to your trade qualifications, you will also be required to obtain the QBCC approved Managerial Course.

Employee vs Self-Employed

If you work as an employee, and your employer has a licence for the work, you’re covered. But, if you’re working for yourself, on a subcontract, or have employees, and you’re doing carpentry work over $3,300 (including labour and materials), you must make sure you are licensed correctly.

Understanding Licence Coverage

A QBCC Carpentry Licence covers a broad range of construction work in residential and commercial environments. Anyone can apply for a Carpentry Licence, but to be successful you must demonstrate to QBCC you are qualified in both the trade and have a sound understanding of legal and risk management in business.

The Benefits of Being Properly Licensed

Once you’re licensed correctly, you can take on a broad range of building and construction work for homeowners, businesses, or builders. This includes your ability to obtain QBCC Home Warranty Insurance for contracts direct to homeowners.  You can specialise in fencing, custom interiors, decks, or get your foot on the ladder toward a full builder licence by becoming a site supervisor.
