Embark on your journey to becoming a licensed swimming pool builder in NSW and/or QLD. This guide covers everything from certification scope and qualification requirements to licence application requirements. Remember, if you’re planning on doing work above $3,300 in QLD, or $5,000 in NSW, you must be licensed for the work, whether you are the principal contractor or subcontractor.
what is swimming pool building work?

Swimming pool building refers to all work involved in the construction, renovation, alteration, repair, extension, maintenance, decorative or protective treatment of a swimming pool.

It includes all other work directly associated with a swimming pool installation such as landscaping, safety fencing, pool water filtration and heating.

Swimming pool building also includes all work referred to in the swimming pool repairs and servicing licence category and includes a spa pool but does not include a spa bath or anything in a bathroom.

Any contract to build a swimming pool can include any specialist work that needs to be done as part of the overall job, and any specialist work can be appropriately subcontracted.  This subcontracted work however must be carried out by the holder of a licence in that specialist category.

 what else do I need?

To obtain your pool builders licence in NSW or QLD, the first step is to obtain the required units from CPC40808—Certificate IV in Swimming Pool and Spa Building.  This licence covers both concrete and prefabricated pools.  It also covers associated contract works such as landscaping, pool fencing and repairs and maintenance.

The requirements for a licence application vary by state. In Queensland, you will require both CPC40808—Certificate IV in Swimming Pool and Spa Building and BSBESB402 — Establish legal and risk management requirements of new business ventures.

In New South Wales, you will need CPC40808—Certificate IV in Swimming Pool and Spa Building and provide a short work history, which we can do for you.
