In Queensland, the QBCC Trade and Builders licences fall into one of two categories: Contractor, and Nominee Supervisor. So how do you get a Nominee Licence?
First, let’s talk about what it’s for. Most people who are chasing a Nominee Licence are doing so to help set up their building company. Holding a Nominee Licence is an important part of this process. Any company that takes on building work in QLD must have a nominee for that scope of work, and they are responsible for making sure the company is doing the right thing in terms of building standards, construction codes, and supervising the building work itself. The company handles the finances, contracts and assets. You might also be the director for your company, so you’ll have a responsibility over and above just making sure the building work is carried out properly.
The Nominee Supervisor Licence that you can get will depend on your qualifications and background – because you can only get licensed for what you are experienced and skilled in. You can get a Nominee Supervisor Licence in any trade, which is ideal if you’re setting up a business that specialises in Carpentry, Structural Landscaping, Waterproofing or any of the dozens of other trade licences that the QBCC regulates.
If you want a Builders Nominee Supervisor Licence and a Building Company Licence, that means you first need to meet all the requirements of a Builders Licence as an individual. This is true whether you are looking to start your own Building Company from scratch, or move up into the role of Nominee Supervisor for a company already in business.
Getting your Nominee Supervisor Licence is the first step toward starting your own company. If you just want to focus on getting licensed personally first, a Contractor Trade or Contractor Builders Licence might be the better fit for you.
Construction Licensing specialises in helping our clients figure out how to highlight the different ways they meet the requirements for a Builders Licence. We take the time to go through your work experience to help you find any gaps that might affect a licence application, and give you the bottom line.
The same basic licensing rules apply in NSW which also require a Nominee (Qualified Supervisor Licence) to be appointed for a Company Licence or Partnership Licence.
The QBCC has another supervisor licence known as the Site Supervisor Licence.
This is different to a Nominee Supervisor Licence, and is a great stepping stone for anyone who is looking to get their Builders Licence in the future. Similar to a Nominee Supervisor licence, the Site Supervisor Licence is a licence that concentrates on your ability to supervise and manage building work, but has no contracting power or financial responsibility associated with it. It’s great for employees who are looking to get their Builders Licence in the future.
This is just a broad view of some of the major licence types under the QBCC. The right licence for you (or your business) is always going to come down to your personal circumstances. Construction Licensing is here to help you find the right path towards your licensing goals.
